What an incredible wedding experience with Tedi and Alex and their lovely families who travelled all the way from Canada and also guests from Germany to enjoy time together in our meadow. We engaged the services of Lindsay of Get Knotted to plan the wedding and then a year’s worth of planning got started with incredible attention to detail across the oceans! Tedi and Alex combined excellent local ingredients with imaginative flair to enjoy their Special Day, starting with hair, make up and attire of the chic 1940’s/50’s era. Vintage cars then whisked them off in true style to Melrose Abbey where an owl flew in with the ring (a surprise for Ainsley a great Harry Potter fan and the rest of the guests) then it was back to Roulotte Retreat to 'jump the broom' in the meadow with all their family and friends calling them to jump into their new life together as a family. Next was the Studio, tables and chairs elegantly dressed around the wood burning stove for a Tasting Banquet created by Cathy, the most fabulous chef and toasted with their favourite Rums! After dinner Tedi and Alex had arranged for the Shadow Cutter to fly up from London to create cameos for their guests and as a keepsake book of their special day. This family were of all generations and certainly knew how to enjoy time together, partying, walking, laughing, golfing and hanging out in true style, the meadow was so quiet after they left and we missed them all. We hope to see them all over in Scotland again in the future, or perhaps in Canada one day!
"When we first got engaged, the idea of a wedding was terrifying. Overwhelming. Filled with ideas of caving to pressures to make it something we were not. So we eloped. Found a JP and got married in his living room. But as time passed, we found that the idea of a ceremony – something to include our family in – became more important. Especially something that included our daughter.
My husband and I decided we wanted small, intimate, unusual, memorable and above all – a relaxing and enjoyable experience for all. We didn’t want our mothers running around the day picking up flowers, or ironing shirts. The colorful roulottes in the meadow called to us.
The Retreat was all of this, quiet, peaceful, and all to ourselves. It fit all of our guests perfectly for the four days we stayed. Avril was prompt in her email responses, and very helpful in guiding us towards a wedding planner. From 4,000 miles away every detail was taken care of, so that when we did show up – there was nothing left to do except remember to breathe. (the lovely breakfast baskets were some of the best parts!)
When the day arrived, Avril and Alan ordered in some sunshine in the meadow. Alex, myself and our daughter were provided with a handmade broom and jumped over it as a family in front of ours. Our evening concluded with a beautiful local meal in the colorfully decorated Studio then back to the Roulottes for a night under the stars.
Avril and Alan, Chloe and Bear – we cannot thank you enough for your kindness and family-like hospitality. You made us feel very welcome, and very well taken care of. The inclusion of our daughter in your day to day workings, as well as your kind parting gift to her has left a lasting impression. (plus some great furry guides, Chloe and Bear, on our trail hikes)
As my grandparents are approaching their late eighties, they have come to realize that long overseas travel may no longer be on the cards. We, and they, wish to personally thank you for creating such a welcoming environment for them. You helped give them the last Scottish trip of their dreams. It is something they still phone us to reminisce about.
Roulotte Retreat allowed all of our guests to relax, enjoy their travels, and one another’s company. For many of them, it was a new experience. A chance to finally turn the world off and focus within. We could not find fault in the day, and cannot wait to return."
