In March 2008 the idea emerged of a romantic retreat in our meadow in the Scottish Borders. A place to restore, recharge, rejuvenate, just by being there, surrounded by nature.
Returning to the sounds, smells and earthy pleasures of walks through the woods, up the Eildon Hills, by the River Tweed….birdwatching, painting, writing, cycling – taking time out from busy lives to be at one with nature again.
We searched for the ultimate in romantic accommodation – and we found it with the Romany caravan or Vardo and then we went that bit further…….

We travelled to France in September 2008 to seek artisans who could create our dream of wooden Romany style caravans, or Roulottes as they are known in France.
We wished for magic with elegance, luxury with simplicity, all mod cons with a genuine sense of timelessness.

All of this and more – to be in beautiful surroundings – a natural landscaped meadow with secluded space for each of the eight roulottes, all set around a wildlife lochan. To complete that WOW factor … exquisite, yet quirky interiors so that each roulotte has its own individual character which is unique in colour, texture, furnishings and fabrics.

For our guests…..

We want our guests to enjoy a relaxed, nurturing visit with time and space for themselves, enhanced by walks, treatments of massage, personal training, Yoga, mindfulness, time to learn with writers and artists and discover our wonderful restaurants and cafes nearby.

For the wildlife and environment ….

We have enhanced the beauty of the local landscape by planting more native trees, shrubs and wildflowers providing a natural environment where both holiday guests and our resident wildlife will happily co-exist in harmony with each other.

Our wish is to provide a truly authentic experience for our guests in a unique destination in the midst of the unspoilt Scottish Borders countryside – an area of outstanding natural beauty, where we live and so voilà … Roulotte Retreat is born.
